A framework for assessing measurable, scientifically grounded and verifiable CO₂ avoidance from electricity generated from greengas.
The Quality Greengas to Electricity Standard™ defines the credit-generation methodology for greenhouse gas emission reduction and avoidance resulting from replacing fossil-based “dirty” electricity with electricity generated from greengas.
Greengas can be produced through the decomposition of organic materials such as biomass, household waste, algae from aquaculture, or other organic feedstocks; the process may be accelerated by chemical catalysts.
Greengas is used in a gas engine, and an inverter/generator converts the available energy into electricity that can be fed into the grid.
QGES™ quantifies and verifies CO₂ avoidance resulting from replacing electricity generation supplied by fossil sources.
QGES™ is used to assess projects that generate electricity from greengas. The Standard focuses on measurable GHG avoidance resulting from the replacement of fossil-based electricity generation.
The technology and its key processes, the quantity of greengas, energy conversion efficiency, electricity generated and fed into the grid, and annual CO₂ savings.
Calculations also consider the pre-project state, input/output material and energy flows, the fossil-based electricity grid, and relevant emission data.
QGES™ aims to provide a future-proof, practical methodology for all stakeholders participating in the Voluntary Carbon Market.
Appropriate access to relevant basic data and documentation supports independent cross-checking of the credibility of calculations.
The project owner is responsible for the validity, integrity and accuracy of submitted input data and documentation. Data retrievability is a fundamental operating condition of the VCM.
Continuous improvement of QGES™ is driven by quality management, scientific and technological progress, and sustainability objectives.
Comprehensive technology mapping, process, material and energy flows, assessment of the pre-project state, and evaluation of long-term results.
Assessment of technology, processes, inputs, outputs and calculations, with professional cross-checking of calculations and use of up-to-date variables.
Ownership of the project CO₂ benefit and exclusion of double use must be supported by legally binding declarations; without them, assessment or registration cannot proceed.
The QGES™ process links the greengas → gas engine → inverter/generator → electricity grid chain with production data, efficiency and annual CO₂ savings.
Determination of the quantity of greengas produced from organic feedstocks.
Conversion of greengas into energy and assessment of technological efficiency.
Electricity generation and determination of the amount actually fed into the grid.
Calculation of annual CO₂ avoidance resulting from the replacement of fossil-based electricity generation.
The quantity of Quality Greengas to Electricity Credit™ can be determined from the verified CO₂e result.
The QGES™ Standard also defines the methodological framework for generating Quality Greengas to Electricity Credits™, or QGEC™.
Under QGES™, one carbon credit represents one tonne of CO₂e greenhouse gas emissions in the Voluntary Carbon Market. QGEC™ is based on verified CO₂e avoidance resulting from the replacement of fossil-based electricity generation by electricity generated from greengas.
The Standard follows an ex-post financing logic: payment for registered credits is not intended to support uncertain future activities, but is linked to climate benefits that have already been achieved and verified.
The QGES™ Numeric Counting Model for credit generation is based on the Greengas to Electricity models and the process described in the Standard. The calculation framework defines the relationship between green energy generated from greengas, efficiency, electricity fed into the grid and CO₂ avoidance.
The calculation tables and methodological details designed by iCC for the individual models are the intellectual property of iCC and are not publicly disclosed under the Standard.
QGES™ aims to achieve future-proof results, avoid uncertain or insufficient solutions, and apply a conservative approach to calculating CO₂e avoidance.
This website presents the purpose, application, principles and general calculation logic of the Quality Greengas to Electricity Standard™. The complete Standard contains detailed technological, calculation, documentation and legal requirements.
The Standard, last updated on 16 August 2023, describes the assessment of CO₂ avoidance from projects generating electricity from greengas, the technological process, the calculation model and credit generation.
